"The Night World isn't a place.  It's all around us. It's a secret society of vampires, werewolves, witches and other creatures of darkness that live among us.  They're beautiful and deadly and irresistible to humans.

The Night World laws say it's okay to hunt humans.  It's okay to toy with their hearts, it's even okay to kill them.  There are only two things you can't do with them.

1) Never let them find out the Night World exists.
2) Never fall in love with one of them."

- L. J. Smith

Same title, similar rules but much more in depth.  In this Night World humans only exist for pure entertainment.  Falling in love with them is not even considered as normal by these beings.  There are Four major rulers in this world, the Vampires, Witches, Werewolves and Shapeshifters.  The penalty for loving or even helping a human is a long torturous punishment followed by death.  No one avoids this law.  Royalty and commoners will both suffer this fate if the rule is broken.  The only humans allowed in this world will be used for food, as toys or for hunts.  Humans are vermin, there are not even worth that much.
In this day and age humans are not the only ones that inhabit this era.  There are other forms of life, demons, fae and other such creature.  No matter what the creature, if it is not of the Night World then it is not welcomed in it.  Any such creature brought into the Night World or one that finds it's own way into the Night World shall be hunted and killed.  It does not matter to the leaders how these creatures are killed, just that they not longer breathe before the sun sets.

The leaders in this society are the Redferns.  Though loyalty or rather control is dominant in this group they will not hesitate to kill another or one of their own if it will gain them anything. One of the most powerful leaders is Hunter Redfern, he leads his clan of Redferns with an iron fist.  He has no trouble killing those that try or even think of betraying him.  Another powerful vampire is Thierry Descouedres.  He does not share the same ideas as Hunter but is he not without power in the vampire and other sections of the Night World.  The emblem of vampires is a black rose.

Unlike the vampires, the witches are ruled by a more understanding family.  The Helliwise, also known as the Hearth Women are skilled in the arts of magic and medicine.  The battles between the witches and vampiers are continuous and the only allies formed are by the traitors of both groups. Witches can be recognized by their flower the black dahlia but not often are they found with such a symbol on them.

Within this group of creatures loyalty comes first.  They are ruled by the First House of Shapeshifters, the Drache.  Shapeshifters are able to change into one animal.  The children of the First House of Shapeshifters are able to choose their animal shapes  unlike the normal shifters who are born into an animal shape.  The most powerful shapeshifter is the dragon.  They hold the most power, are the hardest to kill and they are able to take many forms, both human and animal.  They are also very destructive and power hungry thus most of them were killed or put to sleep by the witches.

These group owes loyalty to no one but themselves.  They'd sooner kill one of their own than help each other.  And they tend to think with their stomachs when humans are involved so a human is likely to die before their purpose is stated. Werewolves like to eat the hearts and livers of their preys.  The inner organs are a delicacy to them.  One way to recognize a werewolf is by their flower, a black foxglove, which is usually on something they wear.  Much like the shapeshifters, werewolves are very territorial. Once they gain something they try to keep it at all costs.

The Mystics are what we call creatures without a large group or those that cannot be figured out.  There are not many mystics so they are rarely seen.  For the ones that are seen, their motives are questionable as are their powers.

Within this world there are also four people who could cause it's downfall.  Four were born with the power to destroy and the ones who control these four beings control the fate of this world.  Should one of these beings die, their ultimate power will never be reached.
