The kingdom had known peace for several years under the previous King. The people called him a fair and just King who considered his people and the progress of his kingdom first. 

The King had three children his wives gave him. He made certain each of his children were well educated in the ruling of the kingdom. They were provided with the same lessons, privileges and freedoms so they would never question their position within his household. Wanting to be fair to each of his children, he provided each with a large dwelling. While they had their own space to call home, they would share their land and common areas so they would have a strong bond. The King had heard of too many other kingdoms that lost all but one heir because of greed and he was determine not to see the same fate fall on his kingdom. Some questioned the King's choices in not naming an uncontested heir but the King believed that people would change and he wanted to see how his own children would change before making that choice.

Sadly the King never got to choose. In his Fiftieth year of ruling he died in his sleep. The whole kingdom mourned but they also worried because without an heir, one of the three children would have to rule and no one knew whom it would be. And so the King's worst fear came to pass because none of his children were willing to let the other rule. Each thought they were far more capable than the other two and so the feud for the throne began with the whole kingdom likely to pay the price.
